Born 1831 to 1832, depending on source. It was suggested that Horace was born in Worcester, Vermont, as noted by the town Clerk of Windham, where his death was registered.. Other researchers including Vermont in the Civil War, believe he was born in Moretown, Vermont. Son of Roswell Preston and Susan

Horace was a Civil War veteran whose service was credited to Charlotte, Vermont. He enlisted on January 1, 1864, and mustered in 3 days later. A Private in Company I of the 9th Vermont Infantry, he was wounded at Chapin's Farm on September 29, 1864. He mustered out on May 22, 1865.

In 1871, Horace and Calista's son Frank died in Perkinsville, Vermont.
