Mathematician specializing in algebra and algebraic geometry. He graduated from the Moscow State University (MSU) Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics in 1952. A year later he earned a Doctor of Sciences degree and since 1963 worked at MSU (professor since 1976). Kostrikin was awarded the USSR State Prize in 1968 for his research on finite groups and Lie algebras and elected the corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1976. In 1998 he became Honored Professor of Moscow State University.

Kostrikin published many scientific articles, books, and textbooks, including the university textbook Introduction to Algebra, translated in English and other languages.
