Entered the U.S. Army Air Corp January 3, 1942 at the age of 17 after his mother Nora Ganoe and father Grover Gaston Ganoe signed for him.

Finley trained at Jackson, MS and was assigned to the 10th Air Force, leaving for overseas in June of 1942.

Finley was a B-25 medium bomber Crew Chief stationed at Chakulia, India, 341st Bomb Group, 22nd Bomb Squadron.

On January 12, 1943, Finley was an observer in a three plane training flight out of Chakulia. Two of the B-25's collided in mid-air sending both crashing to the ground killing eleven crew members and the observers.

A military funeral was held at Chakulia for all the men killed including Finley.

Several years after the war ended, Finley and the rest of the men who had been buried at Chakulia were moved to their final resting place in Hawaii.

Finley was the first man to join the service from Giles County, Virginia and the first from Giles County to lose his life during World War II.
