BALL, John Troy, 93, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2011 at home in Sonoma surrounded by his loving family. John was born January 29, 1918 to Walter Nelson and Jessie P. Ball in Balch, Arkansas and was the fifth of seven children. He was a “share-cropper” in Newport, Arkansas and was also in the US Army Horse Calvary Troop A, Second Calvary stationed in Ft. Riley, Kansas in 1936. He later moved to Vacaville, CA where he worked at Basic Foods, Inc. before retiring as a carpenter and shipwright from Mare Island Naval Shipyard after 26 years of dedicated service. He focused his time on the insulation and floor coverings of the U.S. Navy’s submarines.

John was an honest and hardworking man who always put his family first. He enjoyed spending his time fishing and camping along with the Boy Scouts of America as a Scoutmaster. He played a pivotal role in the founding of Sonoma Pioneer Day and also was very active with the Haunted House for many years. He was a faithful, devoted and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints since joining the church in 1959.

John is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Dorothy Ree Ball, of Sonoma; his daughters: Phyllis Newman, Patsy Rojo, and Paula Tarjani; his son-in-laws: Mike Newman, Jim Rojo, and Andras Tarjani. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren. He is greatly missed by his family, friends and everyone who knew him.

Friends are invited to attend a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 21, 2011 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints, 16280 La Grama Drive, Sonoma, CA 95476. Interment immediately following the funeral at Valley Cemetery, 425 East MacArthur Street, Sonoma, CA 95476.
