Donald B. Barnwell, 56, of East Flat Rock, died Friday, Feb. 21, 1997, at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville after a brief illness. He was a native of Henderson County, a son of Elsie Merrell Barnwell of Hendersonville and the late William Howard Barnwell.

He was a graduate of Edneyvllle High School Class of 1958 and graduated from Western Carolina University Class of 1962 with a B.S. in math and science. He retired from Henderson County Public School System in 1993 after 30 years of service as a math and science teacher at Flat Rock Junior High.

He was owner and operator of Slick Rock Orchard in Hendersonville and Barnwell's Pick Your Own Orchard In Weaverville. He was past president of Blue Ridge Direct Market Association and past treasurer of Henderson County Beekeepers Association.

He was a member of Mount Moriah Baptist Church.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Peggy Israel Barnwell; daughters, Lisa Barnwell Brown and her husband, Michael of Hendersonvllle, Beth Barnwell of the home; brother, William V. Barnwell of Hendersonville; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at East Flat Rock First Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold McKinnlsh officiating. Burial will be in Bat Cave Baptist Church Cemetery. Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors Is in charge of arrangements.
