Dorothy Mae Dowen Bain, 76, of Terre Haute died Thursday, May 7, 1998, in her residence. She was a teacher for the Vigo County School Corp., for 22 years.

She was born Jan. 5, 1922, in Terre Haute to Ruben Dowen and Ellnora Allen Dowen. Her husband of 45 years, Leslie Bain Jr., died Aug. 6, 1988.

Survivors include one son, Leslie E. Bain III of Evansville; two sisters-in-law, Mary Dowen and Charlotte Ellen Bain Connor, both of Terre Haute; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Thelma Scott, Ruth Greene and Mary Caserotti; and two brothers, Frank Dowen and James Dowen.

She was employed in the insurance business for 23 years. She taught five years at the former Gerstmeyer Junior High School, one year at the former Gerstmeyer High School and at Terre Haute North Vigo High School from time of opening until her retirement in 1987. She was a life member of the National Education Association, a member of Theta Alpha Phi Honorary Fraternity at Indiana State University, where she helped Mr. Thomas Headly and Dr. Gladys Rohrig originate Summer Theater. She worked in summer theater for eight years. She was a life member of the Womans Department Club and was a program chairman for the art and music department. She was vice-president of Colonial Dames, a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the Daughters of the American Colonist. Her love of flowers led her to be a member of the Fair Garden Club.

Services were at The Callahan Funeral Home. Entombment is in the mausoleum at Roselawn Memorial Park, Terre Haute, Indiana. Pallbearers were Mike Greene, Frankie Dowen, Jim Allen Dowen, Fred Herrington, Andy Mech and Jim Peo.
