The son of Russell and Peoebe (Chaffee) Carroll and brother of Grant Carroll, who died at Andersonville on August 1, 1864, one day after Obed. His brother Grant is buried in Grave 4456.

Obed J. Carroll was a 38 year-old Shoemaker from Warren, MA, when enlisted on November 27, 1863 and was mustered into service on December 7, 1863. Captured at Plymouth, NC, when his Regiment surrendered over 200 men, Obed died at Andersonville on July 31, 1864 due to Dysentery.
