An award-winning iris fancier, his garden in Oklahoma at one time consisted of 1500 named and registered irises. He hybridized and registered an iris, which he named "Messiah's Mantle."
Preceding him in death was his mother, Pauline Chapman; step-father, J.Q. Chapman; half-brother, John L. Norton; and half-sister, Violet Oswald.
He was survived by his wife, Maude Norton of Winnsboro; half-brothers, Kenneth Chapman of Ferriday; C.J. Norton and John Ellis Norton of Cottage Grove, TN; half-sisters, Brenda Burton of Vicksburg, MS; Mary Johnson of Hensley, AR; Gail Clolinger of Cottage Grove, TN; Frances Conley of Chicago, IL; and Peggy Howell of McComb, MS; an uncle; three aunts; several cousins, nieces, nephews.
