Ryan was a 2002 graduate of Union High School and was employed as a Behavior Modification Specialist at Camp White Pine in Jonesville, SC. Survivors in addition to his parents include one son, Zyan Allen; one brother, Brian Gist; two sisters, Kendra Brandon and Joylisa Brandon; his maternal grandparents, John Henry and Madagalen Allen all of Union.
