Joel was a son of Jonathan and Hannah Spencer Reed who were of an early pioneer family in the village of Marcellus, Onondaga County, New York. The Reeds, Bowens, and the Codys all helped establish the nearby hamlet of Clintonville and were prominent in the early Marcellus history. Many of their descendants still live in the area to this day.

Jonathan Reed was the son of Zebulon Reed and Esther Tracy. He (Jonathan) was born in Pittsfield,

Berkshire, Massachusetts in December,1805. He married Hannah Spencer, born in New York in June,

1808. She died in 1885. Zebulon was the son of Charles Reed and Katurah (Keturah) Alger.

Joel's siblings were as follows:

(a.) Lucy Reed

(b) Laura Reed married Anson Van Saun.

(c.) Mary Reed

(d.) John B. Reed

(e.) Charles B. Reed (June 1841-1865.) Killed in action in City Point, Virginia, during the Civil War.

(f.) James Reed

(g.) Mortimer Edmund Reed md. Rexaville (Rexy) Havens of Mentz, Cayuga County,New York. He was born August 18, 1845 in Marcellus and died on May 23, 1919 in Syracuse, New York area.

(I.) Ida Reed married John Seymour. Lived and died in Marcellus, New York.

(j.) George H. Reed born March 15, 1833 in Marcellus, New York. He died in Patton, Indiana, in 1899.

Burial site unknown. He was married on January 15, 1859 in Marcellus to Martha Sarr, who was

born in Cayuga County in 1838. She was the daughter of William Sarr and Sarah Van Waggoner.

They had four children:

1. Grace A. Reed 1864-1942 died in Chicago, Illinois (See #25966329).

2. Blanche Reed Townsley 1874- 1942. See #25850105.

3. George H. Reed 1868- prob. died in Chicago.

4. Kate S. Reed 1877- prob. died Illinois.

Joel served in the Civil War, enlisting August 1, 1862 in Syracuse, where he was then living. He served in Co. D, 122nd New York Infantry. He was mustered out on August 9, 1863. He was wounded in the neck while on patrol along the Potomoc. He then served in Co. E, 193rd Reg. New York Volunteer Infantry. He was mustered out on June 16, 1865.

Joel Reed was married to Harriet (last name believed to be Williams) who gave him two daughters. It is believed she died when her daughters were small probably before 1865 and most likely in the Onondaga County area.

a.) Anna Emogene Reed born 1856 in Marcellus, Onondaga, New York.

b.) Minnie Reed born 1860 in Marcellus, Onondaga, New York.

Joel married for the second time to a Louisa Burns who was born in Canada. Joel and Louisa moved to Chicago, Illinois about 1910 to be near daughter, Anna and husband, Robert Read. Joel died February 26, 1913 there, and Louisa died a few days later. I assume she is buried in the same cemetery as he is but need more proof.
