MISHAWAKA - Edwin Earl Hatton of Mishawaka, Indiana and Palm Desert, California lost his battle with complications of lung disease on June 13, 2013 in San Dimas, California. He was surrounded by his family as he passed peacefully from this world. Born in January 1928 in Morgantown, West Virginia, Ed was the youngest of seven children of whom four survived. His parents were the late Frederick Howard Hatton and Lenis Jenny Johnson Hatton. Charles was the eldest child, then Maxine, Frederick, and little Eddy. A Depression baby, his family lived in Indiana and Ohio where his father sought work. He graduated from Wilbur Wright High School in Dayton, Ohio where he played drums in the band and worked at a bowling alley setting pins after school. Upon graduation, Edwin enlisted in the Army Air Corps and entered Air Pilot School at Randolph Field, Texas in 1948. His career in the United States Air Force took Lieutenant Hatton to Korea and Japan, which ignited his lifelong love of travel. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1952 while serving in Korea. After his overseas service he returned home and met and married his first wife, Lucile Ward Hatton. They started their life together in Oklahoma City. Ed became a flight instructor at radar controller's school at Tyndall AFB in Panama City, Florida where their eldest daughter Loraine was born. Moving back to the Midwest, Edwin entered the Ohio State University in 1953 and earned a BA in Business in 1955. Their daughter Julia was born in Columbus, Ohio during this time. After accepting a job with a national company and relocating to Birmingham, Michigan, their youngest daughter Jan Marie completed the family. Corporate life didn't quite suit the young entrepreneur so he started his own company, Engineered Rubber and Plastics, in South Bend, Indiana, where the family put down roots. He also started the William Calvert Company, a successful real estate business. After joining the South Bend Flying Club, Ed began flying again for business and pleasure. Later he developed a passion for Mooneys and owned several of their airplanes before he retired from flying at age 78. The Hattons were active members of Grace Methodist United Methodist Church in South Bend and raised their family in South Bend schools. They were members of Married Folks Dancing Club and enjoyed their duplicate bridge group as well as the company of many good friends. Ohio State football games were always a part of the fall schedule. His family members were the beneficiaries of his love of travel, enjoying many good times on adventures with Dad. His marriage to Lucile Hatton ended in 1985. Ed married Dorothy Clark Finke of Winamac, Indiana in 1987. They moved to a home on the St. Joe River in Mishawaka and later acquired a winter home in Palm Desert, California, where he loved looking out his back window at the beautiful San Jacinto Mountains and the golf course at Oasis Country Club. Ed and Dorothy appreciated life in the desert for dining out, golfing, and relaxing. They visited many exciting travel destinations including China and Europe and cruised to Australia, New Zealand, and the surrounding islands just before Ed became ill. Collecting Southwestern art and listening to good music, especially opera, were some of the other passions of his life as well as enjoying fine wine and watching his beloved Buckeyes. Of course they made new friends wherever they went because he never knew a stranger. Ed took delight in his family. He and Dorothy hosted Hatton family reunions in French Lick, Indiana and Branson, Missouri, never missing an opportunity to bring loved ones together. Edwin is survived by his wife of twenty-six years, Dorothy June Hatton. His daughters are Loraine Stubbs of Denver (Randall), Julia Finn of Antioch, California (Steve), and Jan Collins of Denver. Stepsons are Jim Finke (Faye) of Macy, Indiana and Jeff Finke of Kewanna, Indiana. Grandchildren are Amanda Stubbs of Detroit, Mitchell Stubbs of Denver, and Andrew and Wyatt Finn of Antioch, California. Also surviving are grandchildren Hillary Staples and Heaven Ramos of Logansport, Indiana, Jona Faye Cottrell of Rochester, Indiana, Chris Finke of Kewanna, and Kendra Finke of Kokomo, as well as several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Charles, sister Maxine, and brother Frederick as well as his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Hatton. Mr. Hatton is survived by sister-in-law, Mrs. Charles Hatton of The Woodlands, Texas. His nieces and nephews are Charles Hatton of Minneapolis, Barbara Heinz of The Woodlands, Texas, Vicky Jones of Marion, Indiana, Jerry Barker of Brownsberg, Indiana, Carol Hatton of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Shirley Cotrel of Upland, Indiana, and the late Larry Enyeart. Services will be held for friends and family at Grace United Methodist Church, 3012 S. Twyckenham Drive, in South Bend on July 13th at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Salvation Army or Grace United Methodist Church. A military burial service will be held at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado at a future date.
