CANAAN, VT — Ruthe F. Bruce, 87, of Canaan, Vt., passed away on Tuesday morning, June 25, 2013, at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital in Colebrook, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Methuen, Mass., on June 7, 1926, the only child of the late Adolphe and Electra (Sweet) DeCauwer. She graduated from Searles High School in 1944, and then attended MacIntosh College.
For more than 20 years, Ruthe worked as an executive secretary for the Jo-Gal Shoe Co. in Lawrence, Mass. Upon moving north, she continued working as a volunteer in the Stewartstown school teaching after-school sewing classes. She loved to sew and quilt, and produced much over the years which her family all enjoy. One of the things that she cherished the most was helping to raise her great-grandson, Drake Cann, and spending very special times with him. Ruthe was a very spunky lady who had a wonderful sense of humor which will be missed by all her family and friends. She was a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, #204, in Methuen and was a member there for more than 50 years.
She is survived by her daughter, Candace Placey and husband Brian of Clarksville, NH; four grandchildren, Sherri Bouchard and Arlene "Lene" Bruce of Laconia, NH; Holly Meehan of Colebrook, NH, and Beth Gallos of Laconia; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.
She is preceded in death by a son, F. Robert Bruce III in 1978.
