Charles H. Joyce (1928 - 2013)
ANDOVER - Charles H. Joyce, 84, of Andover passed from this life on Sunday (June 9, 2013) after an extended illness.
He was born on Dec. 11, 1928, to Vincent and Alice Graves Joyce. On Nov. 26, 1949, he married Lorraine Hyland Joyce, who survives.
Charlie grew up on the family farm in Andover and began working in the oil and gas industry at the age of 14. In 1950, he and his brother James V. Joyce formed Joyce Pipeline Company. In 1981, with his son Charlie P. Joyce, he purchased Otis Eastern Service Inc., located in Wellsville. Otis Eastern is now one of the leading pipeline contractors in the U.S. Although he "officially" retired in 1994, he kept an office there and continued to work on a wide variety of projects.
He hosted a steady stream of visitors who came to recall fond memories and discuss forgotten days.
At the time of his death, he served as president of Andover Oil, a company he founded after his retirement. He had an incredible understanding of his industry and was a respected expert in his field. He would say that he was especially blessed to do what he loved and to work alongside his family and dear friends for his entire life.
He was an avid reader and spent a good bit of time on the golf course in his later years. He was extremely proud of his Irish heritage. He was a quiet philanthropist, always willing to help those in need. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Andover and the Blessed Pope John XXIII in Fort Myers, Fla.
He was a member of the Andover Lions Club, the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Wellsville Elks Club. He was a longtime officer of the New York State Oil Producers Association, serving as its president since 2008.
Charlie was honored for his distinguished service to the energy industry by being named an honorary member of the Pipe Line Contractors Association, for which he and Lorraine attended the annual convention for more than 50 years. He was also an ardent conservationist, having received many awards and citations for his stewardship of the land he loved. He understood that development and preservation could be done in harmony.
Although he traveled the world, and in his later years spent part of each year in Fort Myers, Fla., Charlie's heart was always in Allegany County. He loved the area and its people. He had a wealth of knowledge about the history of the families here and could track the heritage of countless residents past and present.
In addition to his wife, Lorraine, he is survived by two sons, Charles P. Joyce (Sherry Walton) and Richard (Tina Iantorno) Joyce, both of Wellsville; two daughters, Cheryl (Michael) Jackson of Wellsville and Teresa Joyce of Atlanta, Ga.; six grandchildren, Matthew Jackson, Molly (Burt) Turner, Melanie Jackson, Casey Joyce, Anna Joyce and Cory Joyce; five great-grandchildren, Kylen Jackson, Maeve Turner, Josey Turner, Cal Turner and Wes Urbano; a sister, Mary Anne Davis; a brother, James V. Joyce; three brothers-in-law, Charles Howland, Paul (Carol) Hyland and Carl Atwell; one sister-in law, Suzanne Slocum; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by an infant son, John; a brother, W. Donald Joyce; two sisters, Sandra Howland and Joanne (Merle) Dibble; three sisters-in law, Marianne Joyce, Helma Joyce and Corinne Atwell; and two brothers-in-law, Everett (Abe) Davis and James Hyland.
Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
