In 1879, Martha applied for a widow's pension based on her husband's service in the War of 1812. Even though John had been granted a bounty land warrant for his service, the pension application was rejected on the grounds "that there is no evidence of soldier's service during the War of 1812." Apparently word of the peace treaty being ratified had not yet reached John's unit when he was drafted into service.
