Morgan was the son of Senator William M. and Mary L. (Webster) Butler. He was president and treasurer of the Hoosac Mills, with plants at North Adams and New Bedford and offices in Boston. He was a former president of the National Association of Cotton Manufacturers.
He and his yacht Malabar XIII were prominent contenders in many ocean races. The summer before his death, Mr. Butler and his ketch won the ocean race from Newport to Bermuda and in his last winter, he won the Miami-Nassau race.
After graduating from Harvard in 1911, Morgan entered the family mills, leaving to serve as captain in an airplane fabrics division during WWI.
His first wife was Bernice Fisher, who sang with the Boston Opera company. She died in 1946. November 1948, he married Isabel Jennings. He died at the New Bedford hospital. His funeral was held at Grace Episcopal church on 15th July 1949, and he was buried in South Dartmouth.
