Diana Carlson Peterson 1941 -- 2013
EAST LONGMEADOW--Diana Carlson Peterson, 72, of East Longmeadow, MA, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013. She was born to the late Oscar and Marion Carlson, Jan. 12, 1941, in Springfield, MA. Diana graduated from Springfield Technical High School in 1958, received a BA in Elementary Education in 1962, and a Master of Education in 1964, both from the University Of Massachusetts. She married Allyn K. Peterson on July 14, 1962 and lived together in East Longmeadow for 49 years.
Diana was a teacher at Pleasant View School in East Longmeadow for 5 years before having a family. After raising 2 sons she went back to teaching at the Somers Elementary School in Somers, CT. While there she taught first and second grades and was a mentor for student teachers. While at Umass Diana was a member of the Nyads Swim Team and the Precisionettes Marching Team. In 1975 she was named the East Longmeadow Jaycee-ettes Outstanding Young Woman of East Longmeadow. She was a past president of the Women's Community Club of East Longmeadow.
Diana was a member of The First Congregational Church of East Longmeadow where she served as a Deacon, sang in the choir and played bells in the Bell Choir. She loved playing Golf (recorded a hole-in-one), skiing in the winter and spending a week every year at Samoset Resort in Rockport, ME. She loved watching birds at the various feeders around the house and the springtime when the new flowers were bursting with color. Diana and Allyn celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in July of 2012 with family and friends and went to the International Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque, New Mexico in October.
Besides her husband Allyn, Diana is survived by a son, Erik C. Peterson and his wife Donna of Cape Elizabeth, Me, a daughter in law, Michele M. Peterson of Ludlow, MA, three sisters, Marilyn Ulich of East Longmeadow, MA, Nelma Wood of Sharon, MA, and Dale Carlson of Amherst, VA, and three grandchildren, Chad Peterson, Marshall Peterson, & Wesley Peterson. She was predeceased by a son, Gary A. Peterson on Dec. 2, 2012.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 11, 2013 at 10:00 am at the Forastiere- Smith Funeral Home, 220 North Main St., East Longmeadow, MA. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Park Cemetery.
