Henry A. Nye, Civic Leader, Dies at 58
Henry A. Nye, 58, assistant city-county controller, died last night at 9:15 in Queen's hospital. He suffered a stroke last Friday and had been in the hospital up to the time of his death. Mr. Nye is survived by his wife, Mrs. Pearl Nye, one son, Pvt. Henry Nye, Jr., U.S. Army; four daughters, Mrs. Sarah Ellen Harris of Makaha, Oahu; Mrs. Susan Frances Bennett, San Francisco, Calif.; Miss Joan Nye and Mrs. Alivina Louise Kaulili of Honolulu; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday with burial to follow in Nuuanu Memorial Park. Details of the services are pending. Williams mortuary is handling the arrangements. MR. NYE. was born in Honolulu, Aug. 8, 1895, the son of Captain John Henry and Susan Kamaiokalani (Pua) Nye. He was married to Pearl Kekuamanu, of Honolulu in 1927. He was educated in Honolulu. He was graduated from St. Louis college, where he specialized in accounting. He later took special courses at the University of Hawaii. In his high school days, he was known around the Territory as an outstanding athlete, playing basketball, soccer, football and basketball. IN GOVERNMENT service, he became an expert in the field of finance and budgeting. As an appointee of Governor Farrington in 1922, he served 16 years as registrar of public accounts in the office of the territorial treasurer. In this capacity he served as fire marshal, bank examiner, deputy insurance commissioner and deputy commissioner of securities. He subsequently joined the city controller's staff and at the time of his death was deputy controller. One of his major responsibilities was the job of preparing the mayor's annual budget. HE WAS A leader in numerous civic and fraternal organizations, including the Lions club, Boy Scouts, St. Louis Alumni association, Order of Kamehameha and Holy Names society. He served as district governor of Hawaii Lions and as a director of Lions International. Since 1948 he served as a member of the board of trustees of the Territorial retirement system.
