Aged Citizen Passes Away.

Mrs. H. R. Scoggin, a resident of this community for many years, passed away at her home in this place at 10 o’clock Tuesday night, Feb. 18, 1941, aged 83 years, 2 months and 6 days.

Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock this (Thursday) afternoon in the Methodist church conducted by the pastor, Rev. Omer W. Stantoe, and assisted by Rev. C.H. Swartz, pastor of the Christian church. A mixed quartet composed of Mesdames Elmo Colwell and Omer Stanton and Messrs. S. C. Jones and Geo. Povzer, with Mrs. Elmer Clawson as accompanist sang “In the Garden,” “The Old Rugged Cross” and “God Be With You Till We Meet Again.” Interment was made in the Hartford cemetery. The pallbearers, all grandsons, were Clement, Wayne and Eugene Scoggin, Paul and Howard Baysinger and Arthur Smith.

Cecelia Ann Moore, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Barkley Moore was born at Anderson, Ind., Dec. 12, 1857. She was united in marriage to H. R. Scoggin May 9, 1880, at Butler, Mo. They went from there to Elk county, Kans., where they remained three years and then moved to this community which has since been their home. To this union were born six children all of whom survive except one son who died in infancy.

Mrs. Scoggin had 81 descendants. She is survived by her aged companion; five children, Elmer Scoggin, Mrs. Mollie Baysinger, Mrs. Eliza Smith, Grover Scoggin and Clem Scoggin, all of Hartford; 22 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; three half sisters and a number of other relatives and friends.

The deceased united with the Methodist Episcopal church at the age of 35 years. She was a charter member of the Eagle Creek church, to which she remained faithful until her death. She was a member of the Eastern Star chapter and of the Eagle Creek Aid society, always working for the best interests of the church and the community in which she lived. She was a kind and loving wife, mother and grandmother and an obliging friend and neighbor.
