German journalist and founder of Axel Springer Verlag AG publishing house. Born Axel Cäsar Springer in Altona, Hamburg, he was the son of a publisher. After an apprenticeship as a reporter and editor his career took off with the foundation of his publishing company, Axel Springer GmbH, in Hamburg in 1947 which published the "Hamburger Abendblatt" newspaper and magazines, including the popular radio and TV guide "Hör zu" (circulation quickly grew to over a million circulation). In 1952, he founded and began publication of the colorful tabloid "Bild," Germany's largest circulation daily newspaper and an important influence on public opinion. In 1957 he acquired a parcel in the old Berlin newspaper district and laid the cornerstone for his new publishing facility in 1959; it was completed in 1966 and in spite of the Berlin Wall (the building was adjacent to it near Checkpoint Charlie), he kept his company headquartered there. He went on to launch and acquire a string of papers and magazines characterised by entertainment and conservative politics. The Axel Springer Verlag became one of the most influential magazine and newspaper publishers in Germany with over 180 newspapers and magazines in circulation, 23% of the German market. In 1974 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Israel's Bar-Ilan-University in Ramat-Gan, and by Boston University in 1981, the same year he received the Konrad Adenauer Prize from the Deutschlandstuftung; awarded Berlin's Erst Reuter Medal in 1982 as well as and the Heinrich Stahl Prize of the Jewish Community of Berlin; and in 1983 was the first German to receive the title of "Protector of Jerusalem." Died in Berlin, Germany.
