Jean Grossnickle
Silverton~Jean Grossnickle, age 96, and a longtime resident of Silverton, Oregon passed away on December 30, 2012. Jean Grossnickle was born on July, 26 1916 in Powell, Wyoming to Swedish immigrants Levi and Ida Bygren. She was a twin and one of five girls and one boy. Jean graduated from high school, and then apprenticed to become a hairdresser.
Jean married Wilbur "Bud" Grossnickle, who had been a longtime friend, on December 6, 1943. Jean and Bud moved to Silverton in 1945 where he opened and ran an auto shop. Jean established Jean's Beauty Salon on North Water Street. Until her retirement some fifty years later, she provided hair styling for Silverton area women, including families of several generations.
Jean and Bud shared many interests from regional travel to the Northwest's National Parks to antiquing and dancing. Their shared passion for the outdoors and wildlife was reflected in Jean's art and their mutual woodworking projects. Jean began painting late in life with the Silverton Art Association. She loved portraiture of family members, children, Native Americans and faces of the civil rights movement.
Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bud and her parents and all her siblings. She is survived, loved and missed by many nieces, nephews, as well as great, great, great-nieces and nephews, and friends.
Jean attended services at both Silverton Methodist and Silver Creek Fellowship. A private internment is planned. Arrangements by Unger Funeral Chapel.
