Ivan L. Hyland practiced law in Seattle for more than 55 years. He was a member of Hyland, Elvidge & Watt and a member of the Seattle, Washington State Bar Associations. He was born in Port Townsend, Washington, the son of the Rev. Peter Edward Hyland, a pioneer Episcopal clergyman in the Pacific Northwest and Mary Ann French Hyland. Hs father arrived on the Pacific coast in 1858 as a missionary for the Episcopal Church and formed the first Episcopal churches in Olympia, Tacoma, Seattle and Port Townsend. He was chancellor of the Episcopal Diocese of Olympia from 1928 until his death and was a member of St. Mark’s Parish. He studied law at the University of Toronto. On June 27, 1900, he married Helen Holmes, a member of a pioneer Pacific Northwest family in King County, Washington. He was a member of the Rainier Club and the Seattle Golf Club. He was past President of the English Speaking Union. He was a member of many Masonic groups including Arcana Lodge 87, F.&.A.M.; Nile Temple of the Shrine of which he was a past potentate; Scottish Rite Masons, 33rd Degree and the Royal Order of Scotland. He was also a Knight of the Red Cross of Constantine. He died at the age of 79 years at 8PM on Saturday, November 24, 1951 at a Seattle hospital after a brief illness. Survivors include his wife of 330 30th Avenue South; two daughters: Mrs. B.M. Bryant of Seattle and Mrs. Fred Sanzo of South Braintree, Massachusetts; one son, Edward Holmes Hyland of Spokane; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Arrangements were by Bonney-Watson Co. Funeral services were at St. Mark’s Cathedral, followed by cremation.
