(Nancy was the daughter of John Eversole Bowling and Lucinda Baker source: Harley Tucker Bowling) ...Wife of W.C. Barrett. Nancy had a son, George & he was accused of killing his mother, Nancy and sister, Rachel in an argument. The family lived in the area of Big Hill, Jackson Co, Ky. “Nan” Bowling-Barrett was a granddaughter of Boston Baker. Her son, George fathered a boy that he brought to live with his mother. They quarreled about Nan whipping the boy. On Sept 2, 1930, following a quarrel George went out and got a pistol out of his car. When he returned, Nan was behind the door. She attacked him with a piece of stove wood. A sister, Rachel joined the fight. He shot his mother and killed her. He shot the sister, hitting her in the head, as she ran away. She escaped on the running board of a mail truck. Being wounded, she was taken from Clover Bottom to McKee, Ky, where she died later, in 1931 from pneumonia & complications of the gunshot wound. George left the state but later came back to stand trial when his cousin, Frank Baker, Commonwealth Attorney, was in charge of the trial. George was charged with the murder of his mother & sister (who had died before he was brought to trial). He claimed self defense & the first trial ended in a mistrial & he was acquitted in the second trial.
