According to the "General History of the Burr Family" written by Charles Burr Todd, Cyrus's father was drafted in the War of 1812 and Cyrus took his place. Afterward he volunteered in Capt. Ackerly's Calvary Co.

According to the Muster Rolls of the War of 1812, Cyrus was a drummer and fifer in the New York Militia during the War of 1812. He served in the 55 Reg't (Allen's and Sprague's) under Captain Timothy Cornwell and Captain Martin Barney. He Enlisted Feb 28, 1813, July 29, 1814, October 11, 1814, October 18, 1813, August 22, 1814, and November 14, 1814.

Cyrus married Lydia McCune on 27 Feb., 1820 at Sandy Creek, Oswego Co., New York. In the 1830 census, Cyrus is still found in Oswego Co. In the 1850 and 1860 census, he has moved to Blackford Co., Indiana.
