Samuel was the son of Deacon Edward Church (1628-1704) and his wife Mary Hopkins (1637-1691).

"...Samuel was born in Hadley, not Hatfield. Hatfield wasn't founded until 1673. While it is true that Samuel's father Deacon Edward Church, was an original proprietor of Hatfield, Samuel, born in 1663, could not have been born there. At the time of Samuel's birth, the family was living in Hadley, MA (now in Hampshire Co.). His father, Deacon Edward Church, was an original proprietor here, too, in 1659. Prior to moving to Hadley, Deacon Edward's father (and he of course) lived in Hartford, CT, where the father, Richard Church, had been an original proprietor. Further, while it is known that Samuel died in 1718, the exact date is unknown, only that he was 55 when he died." Source: Deborah Sweet, 2016.
