Private, Co. E, 1st Massachusetts Cavalry

His actual given name was Lowell A. Lockling.

The son of John and Demaria Lockling.

The husband of Cordelia Ella Chartier, who he married at Springfield, MA on May 13, 1860. There were no children born to the marriage.

Joel worked as a mechanic in woolen and cotton mills in Holyoke and Lowell, MA prior to enlisting as a Private in the 1st Mass. Cavalry on September 17, 1861. Taken prisoner at Parkers Store, VA on November 29, 1863, he was removed to Belle Isle in Richmond, VA on December 1st and then transferred to Andersonville in the spring of 1864. Joel died at Andersonville on May 16, 1864 due to Chronic Diarrhea.

Following his death a small silver crescent pin Joel had fashioned from a twenty-five cent coin with a fine pen knife was returned with the rest of his effects to his wife Cordelia. The pin was described as "unbelievably beautiful" and marked with his initials L.A.L., regiment number, and two stars.

Corelia Lochlin moved to Austin, Minn to be with her parents. There she remarried to Robert J. Cochran, her deceased husband's lifelong friend and comrade in Co. E of the 1st Massachusetts Infantry.
