Caroline L. Smith, 86, of Belding, passed away Saturday, July 21, 2012 at the home of her daughter in Belding, surrounded by her loving family. Caroline was born the first of twin girls on April 20th, 1926 at the family home in rural Ionia County to Fred and Grace (Sprague) Lehman.

The girls joined a brother at home and were later joined by three more brothers. She attended several country schools, earning several perfect attendance certificates, often walking 2 miles to school. Through the years, Caroline enjoyed being a Cub Scout leader, flower gardening, embroidery, yard sales, refinishing furniture and making many trips to the Upper Peninsula. Family was very important to Caroline, as was evident by her commitment, compassion and unconditional love in caring for family that needed her. Her working years included gapping spark plugs at AC Spark Plug during World War II, working as a chiropractic assistant for Dr. George Vandermark. She was a cook and waitress at the C&M restaurant, ending her working years as a nurse's aide at Belding Christian Nursing Home.

Caroline leaves behind a son Fred Rowley of Palo, two daughters; Pam (Cam) Vermilya of Flint and Sherry Decker (Ace Fairchild) of Belding, 4 grandchildren; Cam (Kathy) Vermilya of Flint, Steven (Tammy) Vermilya of Mississippi, Ron (Cassie) Schnicke, Kristina (Josh) King all of Belding, 4 great grandchildren, Kevin (Connor) Vermilya, Anna (Keegan) Schnicke, brother and sister-in-law Elden (Jane) Lehman of Ionia, special sister in law Charlotte Gilmor, several nieces and nephews.

The family greatly appreciates the many special friends during her stay at Woodhaven and those who continued to send many cards and made phone calls to her upon leaving. Caroline was preceded in death by her husbands Glen Edwards of Palo, Woodrow (Bill) Rowley of Ionia and Alden Smith of Fenwick, her brothers; George, Russell, Leo and her twin sister Kathleen Rowley, a brother-in-law Gilbert Rowley , a nephew Gilbert Allen Rowley, sister-in-laws; Marilyn Lehman and Ruth Lehman. Although she will be dearly missed by her family they will forever cherish her beautiful warm smile and many memories she has left behind.

Visitation will be 2:00-4:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at Johnson- Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Ken Harger officiating. Committal Prayers will follow in Easton Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Shiloh Community Church or Ionia Area Hospice.
