Richard was residing at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. Campbell, when he died of pneumonia at age 58. He was an employee of Central Pacific Railroad Co. as a sleeping car porter and a member of the Philomathean Lodge, No. 2, FAAY Masons. His funeral was the largest Masonic funeral of color that ever took place in Sacramento up to that time. The line of carriages were three blocks in length. Richard was buried alongside his wife and children. He was survived by a son and the afore-mentioned daughter.
