A 1944 graduate of Georgiana High School, he entered the Alabama Polytechnic Institute on a football scholarship, where he lettered one year. In 1945, he was drafted into the Air Force and later met and married Abbie Jo Stone in Wichita Falls, TX. After his duty in the air Force, he worked at Swift's Meat Packing Plant in Dallas, TX. He finished school and served as coach at Georgiana High School.

In 1947, he returned to Auburn University as a student and graduated in 1950 with a BS degree. After graduation, He served as coach and teacher at Valley High School for three years, followed by six years as coach and teacher at Enterprise High School. In 1959, he received his MS degree.

After the birth of their son, Jim, the family moved to Geneva, where Hub served as Principle of Geneva High School for three years. From 1962 to 1964, He served as High School Relations Director at Auburn University, followed by Superintendent of the Brewton City School System, in 1965. In 1966, their daughter Julie was born. From 1969 to 1981, Hub was the Director of Admissions at Auburn University followed by serving as the Head Master at Scott Preparatory School in Opelika. After serving as Head Master, he returned to Auburn University as Associate Vice President of Student Affairs. In 1990, he retired from Auburn University.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Jo S. Hawkins; son, James "Jim" (Patricia) Herbert Hawkins; daughter, Julie (Kelly) Hawkins Leonard; granddaughter, Lexi Leigh Leonard and grandson, Christopher James Hawkins.

Visitation was held on Friday, August 3, 2012, at the Jeffcoat-Trant Funeral Home.
