November 1942 – Passage. ASHTON, Nov. 10. Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Ann Fuqua, 84, former resident of Ashton, were held Saturday at the Methodist Community church at Ashton with the Order of the Eastern Star and the Rev. Miss Eva W. Brown officiating.

Rites were held Thursday at 4 o’clock at the Gothic chapel in Spokane, Wash., under the direction of Hazen and Jaegers funeral home. Following a brief illness Mrs. Fuqua died at Spokane Tuesday, November 3 at 12 o’clock midnight at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sadie Saffle.

The O.E.S. ceremony was conducted with Mrs. Dan Thomas acting as worthy matron and Winfield Lane of Shelley as worthy patron. Vocal duets, “I Need Thee Every Hour” and “Abide With Me,” were sung by Mrs. D. H. Van Deusen and Mrs. L. R. Barrick. A musical reading, “He Giveth His Beloved Sheep,” was given by Mrs. E. L. Hargis. The prelude and postlude, “Chopin’s Funeral March,” and musical accompaniment was played by Mrs. E. D. Duke.

Born In 1858. Mrs. Fuqua was born November 22, 1858 at Macon City, Ia., a daughter of Joseph and Mary Trentham. Her childhood was spent in Iowa and Missouri. She was married to Richard Hen Fuqua at Waverly, Kas., on January 1, 1876. Following her marriage she lived in Kansas, moving to Butte, Mont., in 1904, and to Ashton, Idaho in 1918. For the past six years she made her home with her son, Harold, in Spokane, Wash.

Besides one brother, Joshua Trentham of Florence, Colo., she is survived by two daughters and three sons, Mrs. Sadie Saffle of Spokane, Wash., Bert A. Fuqua of Sparks, Nev., George A. Fuqua of Gig Harbor, Wash., Harold Fuqua of Spokane and Mrs. Winifred Stewart of Ashton, 14 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband who died in 1917, a daughter, Mrs. Marie Swanstrum in 1930 and a son, Fred Fuqua in 1917. Mrs. Fuqua was affiliated with the Methodist church at Twin Bridges, Mont., and a member of Gem chapter No. 50, O. E. S. at Ashton.

Pallbearers Named. Pallbearers were Frank Eichelberger of Idaho Falls, Ida., Dr. E. L. Hargis, Will Swanstrum, Fred Swanstrum, Willard Bonneru and C. G. Wilcomb. Members of the Eastern Star and close friends acted as flower bearers.
