WHITECOURT (Alberta, Canada) - William Waitsfield LaFountain, 86, formerly of Middlebury, Vt., died on June 19, 2013.

He was born Jan. 14, 1927, in Middlebury, the son of William and Dorothy (DeGray) LaFountain.

He graduated from Middlebury High School in 1947, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during WWII.

He was a mail carrier for the Middlebury post office for many years before he retired and moved to Canada in 1974.

He married Betty Jean Williams of Brandon, Vt., in 1952. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Oct. 16, 2012.

He was a blacksmith and ran a dogsled for many years.

He enjoyed hunting, gardening, fishing and poetry.

Survivors include his wife Betty; eight children, Michelle LaFountain, Julie Miller, and Amy Muir, all of Dallas, Texas, Leni O'Donnell, Billy LaFountain, Andrea Held, and Mark LaFountain (with whom he resided), all of Canada, and Alice Shepard of Sumter, S.C.; a sister, Alice Recane of Warrenton, Va.; a brother Eugene of Beulah, Ala.; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a sister, Harriot Palmer of East Middlebury, and a brother, Thomas LaFountain of Goshen.

A memorial service was held June 23, 2013, at Headwaters Ranch in Pink Mountain, British Columbia, where they resided for more than 30 years.
