Unusually, in an era when children followed marriage like night follows day, Jane did not give birth to their first child until almost four years later. But their baby girl died before she even was given a name. Nearly four years later, in June, 1840, their second daughter was born. But, barely eight months later, Mary Eugenia too was brought to her grave. Finally, in 1842, Jane gave birth to Mary Jane Rowley, who lived.
But when this baby was just three months old, just three days before Christmas, Jane Adelaide Rowley died of consumption.
