Screenwriter. He is best known for his screenplays of such classics as "Sabrina" (1953), "The King and I" (1955), "Sweet Smell of Success" (1957), "North by Northwest" (1959), "West Side Story" (1961), The Sound of Music (1963), "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" (1966), "Hello, Dolly" (1968) and "Family Plot" (1976). He was one of the last survivings of Hollywood Golden Age. Served as president of the Writers Guild of America from 1983-85. He received and Honorary Oscar in 2001.
