James served as a 2nd Lt. and Pilot on B-17F "Cesspool Cedric" #42-3383, with the 341st Bomber Squadron, 97th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Harrington, Kent County, Delaware prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on January 7, 1942 in Wilmington, Delaware. He was noted as being Single, without dependents.

James was "Killed In Action" over Romania durng the war.

He was awarded an Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster and a Purple Heart.
