Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Santa Maria Codifiume, Luigi Giordani was ordained priest by Cardinal Ignazio Giovanni Cadolini on September 19, 1846, after completing his studies at the seminaries of Ferrara and Bologna. Earning a degree in law from Rome, he pursued his studies at the Pontifical Academy of Noble Ecclesiastics. Moving to Marino, near Rome, during the political unrests of 1848, critically denouncing the exponents of the Republic in a letter to his father in 1849, the said writing was intercepted, causing his arrest. Transferred to Rome, he was released following the intervention of General Giuseppe Galletti, an acquaintance of the family, who thus avoided him severe consequences. Named domestic prelate of His Holiness in 1852 and assistant to Cardinal Giacomo Antonelli, Secretary of State, in December that year he was appointed apostolic delegate for the city of Ascoli Piceno, where he led among other things, the relief distribution during the cholera epidemic. Assigned the same office for the city of Velletri in 1856, he took charge in controlling banditry, organizing the gendarmerie and military bodies. Appointed to the city of Perugia in 1859, Giordani was named counselor of the Sacred Consulta of Finances that same year, cleric of the Apostolic Chamber in 1863, and auditor of the Sacred Roman Rota, an office which he held for four years. Elected auxiliary bishop for the see of Ferrara, receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Philadelphia in Arabia in the chapel of the Oblates of St. Frances of Rome at Tor de'Specchi, Rome, on March 6, 1871, from Cardinal Luigi Vannicelli Casoni. Following the latter's demise, Giordani was promoted to metropolitan see of Ferrara on June 22, 1877. Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of March 14, 1887, with the title of Ss. Silvestro e Martino al Monte Celio. The Cardinal died in Ferrara and was buried at the Cimitero della Certosa of the same city.
