ATHENS — David "Poppy" Beavers, 74, of Athens died Wednesday, June 26, 2013, in Tyler.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Living for the Brand Cowboy Church with Brother Dale Perry officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home of Athens.

Mr. Beavers was born July 20, 1938, in Delwin to Samuel Eugene and Bessie Lee Lerrmon Beavers. After serving in the Navy, David worked in the oil field industry in Pampa. He then went to work for Yellow Freight Co. from 1965 until his retirement in 1980. He married Mary Jo Carrigan on Nov. 25, 1971, in Amarillo. They moved to Athens in 1982 and David operated M.J. Mowing Service until his death. He and Mary are members of Living for the Brand Cowboy Church of Athens and have been active members since the church met at Athens fairgrounds. David helped in the construction of the new building. He was an accomplished horseman and had competed in team penning and other horse related activities.

Pallbearers will be John Congelton, Steve Kirk, Henry Tolusso, Robert Lane, Leon Simmons and Cliff Bowden.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Mary Jo Beavers of Athens; his daughters, Debbie Head of Davenport, Iowa, Cindy Wilson of Winnemucca, Nev., Tamara Rene Lewis and husband Robert "Howie" of Amarillo and Carla Thurman and husband David of Canyon; and two grandchildren, Cole Thurman and wife Courtney of Amarillo and Audra Thurman of Canyon.

The family suggests memorials be to Living for the Brand Cowboy Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 2178, Athens, TX 75751.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
