Jake Louis Smith, 93 of Spiro departed this life to start a new journey June 26, 2013 in his home with family and friends surrounding him & holding his hand. He was born October 23, 1919 to Albert & Nell Smith in Spiro, Oklahoma. He accepted Christ as his savior and joined the First United Methodist Church of Spiro in 2012. He shared 68 years with the love of his life Velda Ruth (Cantwell) Smith. He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Upon his return home at the end of the war, they built a wonderful life together working on their ranch. Jake retired from Gordon's Transports and a long career in the trucking industry, but never lost his love of old trucks. He received the Founders Award for the starting of the Oklahoma's Chapter of American Historical Truck Society. Jake and Velda Ruth enjoyed traveling to the truck shows and making new friends. He and Velda Ruth also embarked on the real estate development at Ridgewood Estates that is nearly filled with homes today.

Jake was preceded in death by his wife Velda Ruth Smith, his parents, a brother Jack Smith of Archer City, Texas and a sister, Bessie Gail Roberts of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Survivors include his sister, Virginia Lou Fields of Tulsa, Oklahoma, daughter Judy Martin of Springfield, Missouri, son Jake Smith and wife Sheila of Spiro, Oklahoma, and daughter Laura Nell Cavin and husband, Jimmie, also of Spiro, Oklahoma, three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
The service will be held at 2pm Saturday, June 29, 2013 at the Mallory~Martin Chapel of Spiro with a graveside service following under the direction of Mallory~Martin Funeral Home of Spiro and military honors conducted by the Spiro VFW Post 4884.

The family offers a very special thanks to the caregivers that have enriched Jake's life and allowed him to remain in his home. Love and thanks to Ann Clough, Viola Harrell, Wanda Perkins, Crystal Salazar, Melissa Ollar, Tessa Fingerhut and to Advantage Hospice of Poteau, Oklahoma, for their support in a difficult time.

Pallbearers will be Terry Williams, Eddie Cowan, Jim Christy, David Christy, Duane Christian and Charles Campbell.

The family will visit with friends at Mallory~Martin Funeral Home of Spiro, Friday, June 28, 2012 from 6:00pm-8:00pm.
