Crimean War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Davaugh, Ireland, he served as a Private in the 3rd Regiment of Foot, British Army. On September 8, 1855, during the assault on the Redan, Crimea, Private Connors seeing an officer of the 30th Regiment surrounded by the enemy, he rushed to his assistance. He immediately shot one of the Russians and ran his bayonet through another. He then carried on a hand-to-hand encounter against great odds until support came. He later achieved the rank of Corporal and before he could receive his Victoria Cross, Connors tragically died when he fell to his death from the battlements of Port Neuf, on the island of Corfu, where his regiment was then garrisoned. For conspicuous gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on February 24, 1857.
