Shirley Kuper, 86, died Friday, July 31, 2015 at the Southridge Healthcare Center, Sioux Falls, SD.

Shirley Marie Sumners was born on September 15, 1928, at White River, SD, the daughter of Willis “Bill” and Winefred (Edmonds) Sumners. She grew up in the White River area and graduated from White River High School. She was the third eldest of fourteen children. She helped her family by helping care for her younger siblings. She continued her education and went on to become a beautician in 1946. She was one of the two original hair stylists that worked in what would become Stewart’s School in Sioux Falls.

On October 19, 1950 she married Allen R. Kuper.

The couple settled on their farm southeast of Lennox, SD. Allen died on August 31, 1977.

Shirley was a member of Turner County First Presbyterian Church. In addition to working cutting hair, she cared for several people in their homes, over many years. Shirley was a devoted home maker. She took great pride in a clean house and was a wonderful cook. Most of all she was a devoted wife, mother and daughter who always took care of her family. She enjoyed family reunions and time with her siblings.

Besides her husband, Allen, Shirley was preceded in death by siblings: Myrt Larson, Billie Nordlie, Johnnie Sumners, Evelyn Dutoit, Ida Lorraine Sumners, Ike Sumners and Jack Sumners.
