Elza Meador was the son of Anderson and Grace "Graphy" Hoover Meador. His family surname was sometimes spelled Meadow. His father, Anderson, was 24 and his mother, Grace, was 20 when Elza was born.

He married Emma Louise Johnson in 1936 in Owensboro, Kentucky. In about 1940 the couple relocated to Evansville, Indiana, where Elza worked as a plumber and pipe fitter. He was a 25 year member of the Plumber and Pipefitters Union local 136.

Elza was a Southern Baptist and active in his church. He and his wife, Emma, provided a home for his mother in her later years.

He was preceded in death by his wife Emma. They had no children.
