Donald A. Rothschild, 70, of
739 Polk St., died at 7:30 a.m.
Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospital
in Rochester, Minn.
He was born in Madison,
S.D., April 14, 1900, the son
of Walter and Mabel Gardner
Rothschild. He was married to
the former Marie Peterson June
17, 1926 in DeKalb.
Dr. Rothschild is survived
by his widow; one son, Donald,
of Rochester, Minn.; a
daughter, Mrs. Herbert (Ann)
Meyer, of New York City; a
sister, Mrs. Clarence Voswell [sic*] of
Rockford; and three
grandchildren.
Dr. Rothschild joined the
staff of Eastern Illinois
University in September, 1934,
and retired May 31, 1967. In
his 33 years at Eastern, he held
the following positions:
principal of Eastern State High
School, head of the
Department of Psychology,
director of Testing Services,
and from 1955 to 1957 he was
Director of Education in Pago
Pago, American Samoa.
He received his B.A. degree
from the University of Illinois
in 1924, and his M.A. in 1927.
In 1932, he was awarded a
PhD. from the University of
Iowa. He served on the staff of
the University of Iowa from
1930 until 1932.
Dr. Rothschild was a
member of the First
Presbyterian Church of
Charleston, and was past
president of the Charleston
Rotary Club. He belonged to
the Charleston Masonic Lodge,
the Charleston Country Club,
and the Charleston Elks Lodge.
He was a veteran of World
War I and was an active force
in the community theatre.
Funeral services will be held
at 2 p.m. Friday in the
Harper-Swickard Chapel with
the Rev. Clifford Rust
officiating. Burial will be in
Roselawn Cemetery. Friends
may call after 4 p.m. Thursday
at the funeral home.
The family requests that
donations be given, if desired,
to either the Donald A.
Rothschild Scholarship Fund
or the American Cancer
Society.
