Hiram L. Morse served as a private in the Second Regiment of United States Sharpshooters (Co. H. 2 Reg. U.S.S.S. on the grave marker), skilled marksmen recruited by Col. Hiram Berdan and called Berdan's Rifles. They worked individually as snipers, and in company as skirmishers.

They served in many battles, including:
Second Bull Run, August 30, 1862
Antietam, September 16-17, 1862
Fredericksburg, December 12-15, 1862
Chancellorsville, May 1-5, 1863
Gettysburg, July 1-3, 1863
The Wilderness May, 5-7, 1864
Spotsylvania Court House, May 12-21, 1864
