John M. Grafton, 89, of South Buffalo Township, passed away peacefully Monday, June 24, 2013, at Grey's Colonial Acres Home in Kittanning. Born Aug. 21, 1923, in North Buffalo Township, he was a son of the late Mable Claire (Campbell) and Lawrence B. Grafton. John was the widower of Arveta M. (Gourley) Grafton, who passed in 2005. An Army veteran of World War II, John served with the 124th Cavalry Troop 1, where he was part of the China Burma India Theater. After the war, he went to work as a millwright at PPG in Creighton, retiring in 1980 after 37 years of employment. John was a very active member of Union Baptist Church in North Buffalo Township. He sang in the choir and was a deacon for many years. He also took great pride in being part of ministering to the shut-ins and home bound members of his church. An avid hunter and fisherman, John also was a big sports fan and loved to watch the Pirates. Mr. Grafton is survived by his two daughters, Marlene K. and Don Reesman, of Huntsville, Ala., and Rosalyn M. and Mike Huth Sr., of South Buffalo Township; five grandchildren, Lisa (Chad) Rehnberg, Amy (Scott) Weeks, Julie (Pat) Filer, Jenny (Steve) Omecinski and Mike Huth Jr. He also is survived by his 13 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Claire Leard, of Slate Lick, and Wanda Ridinger, of Ford City. He was preceded in death by his five brothers, Bernard, Theodore, Lawrence, Glenn and Richard Grafton; and four sisters, Lois Lehner, Amber Shearer, Jessie Faye Grafton and Anna Mae Shearer. Family and friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 27, 2013, in REDMOND FUNERAL HOME INC., 524 High St., Freeport. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 28, 2013, at Union Baptist Church, Kittanning, with Pastor Jonathan Hill officiating.
