Colleen Miller McClure, 80, resident of Albuquerque since 1972, passed away peacefully at the Presbyterian Hospital on December 3, 2009. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Colonel Val McClure U.S. Marine Corps. retired; two daughters, Kelly Eileen McClure, 51, is a registered nurse and a resident of Rio Rancho and Cathy McClure Driscoll, 44, the chief operating officer at the Jewish Community Center and a resident of Albuquerque. Other survivors are grandson Trent Nathan McClure Lopez, one sister, two nephews, one niece and three cousins.
Colleen was born in Coquille, OR on November 26, 1929, the oldest child of Wallace Tyrrell Miller and Christina Vetter Miller. Wallace was a civil engineer, a Major during World War II, and for many years a surface water branch engineer in the U.S. Geological Survey who settled with his wife in Albuquerque. Both are now deceased. Colleen's sister, Maxine, died recently and was the wife of retired electrical engineer Dick Witcher of Hammond, LA. They have one son, Kern Witcher, a NASA engineer. Colleen's other sister, Janice, is a resident of Albuquerque and a retired school teacher and the wife of a retired school principal, A. Gilbert Villarreal of Albuquerque. Janice has one son, Howard Sleeper of Taylor Ranch, NM and one daughter, Tyrrell Sleeper of Boulder, CO. Colleen attended the University of New Mexico from 1948 to 1951 as a fine arts student where she met her future husband. They married in 1951 and she accompanied him through his Marine Corps career. In 1967 she and their two daughters accompanied him on a tour of duty with the Chinese Marine Corps in Taiwan where she taught English classes to young Chinese Marine officers. In 1972, they retired and settled in Albuquerque in the northeast heights. For nine years he then worked as an investigator and analyst for the State of New Mexico before retiring fully. Colleen was quiet and friendly, an artist, a lover of animals, and an enthusiast of the natural beauty and wildlife of the American Southwest. Her pastimes included cooking, painting, calligraphy, jewelry and the raising of pet Dachshunds. She was supportive of animal rescue and wildlife organizations, Indian Schools, and religious orders. Her church of choice was the Spanish Fruit Avenue Baptist Church in Albuquerque.
She was a beloved and dear wife, mother, and family member with close friends and neighbors. She will be long and deeply missed
