Betty Whitehead Jeanes, 83, of Johnson City passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2012 in Johnson City following an extended illness.
She was born in Newport but had lived in Johnson City most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Eli and Zelma Costner Mathis. She was also preceded by her husband, Arthur J. Whitehead and by five brothers.Mrs. Jeanes was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Betty worked many years as a nurse at the Johnson City Memorial Hospital and retired from the V. A. Medical Center in 1988.
She was a member of the Moose Lodge of Johnson City and the VFW Ladies Auxillary of Johnson City.
Survivors include. Eight children, Larry G. Whitehead (his deceased wife Donna Austin) of Johnson City, Sharon Smith of Johnson City, Sheila Goins and her husband John of AL, Arthur Whitehead, Jr. and his wife Sue of Jonesborough, Becky Doggett and her husband Denny of NC, Steve Whitehead and his wife Frances, Gary Whitehead and his wife Cora and Nancy Hall and her husband Al all of Johnson City; seventeen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and one great great grandchild; one sister, Barbara Tucker of CA.
Graveside services will be conducted at 12:30 pm on Saturday, March 31, 2012 in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Ftr. Peter Iorio and Rev. Steve Johnson will officiate. Burial will follow the service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 until 12:00 pm on Saturday. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
