Television Producer, Writer, Director. He will be best remembered as the creative force behind the hit series "Family Ties" for which ran from 1982 until 1989. Born into a Jewish family for which was headed by his grandmother, he was raised in Brooklyn where his father worked as a postman. He attended several collegiate institutions, among them Brandeis University and San Diego University and it was during this period when he met motion picture screenwriter Nate Monaster ("That Touch of Mink", 1962) whom suggested Gary embark upon a career in writing. After meeting his future wife, he settled in Berkley, California where the couple opened a day care center. For a time, Goldberg lived in Israel and it was there when he launched his association with television as the star of the series "The Adventures of Scooterman". Upon his move to Southern California, he initiated the scriptwriting aspect as a staff writer for "The Bob Newhart Show". He ventured into producing with "The Tony Randall Show" (1976 to 1978) followed by "The Mary Tyler Show" spinoff "Lou Grant" (1978 to 1979) and during the early 1980s, he formed his own entity Ubu Productions. "Family Ties" was the first effort from his company and in 1987, Goldberg shared an Emmy Award. Additionally, the series made then-unknown Canadian actor Michael J. Fox a household name. Among his other credits include "Brooklyn Bridge" and "Spin City". He directed the feature films "Dad" (1989) and "Must Love Dogs" (2005). Goldberg died following a battle with brain cancer.
