John S. Tharp, son of Joshua and Sarah Tharp, was born in Kentucky Nov. 18, 1841, and departed this life Feb. 14, 1923, aged 81 years, 2 months and 24 days. He was married to Rebecca Fausett, Oct. 5, 1865. To this union were born five children – Florence, Osey, Alva, who died June 16, 1875; Newton, Bert and Walter, who remain to mourn their loss. In early life he joined the Primitive Baptist church and was true and staunch in the faith to the end.
He believed that Jesus Christ was the Son of God and the only power in heaven and earth to save his soul. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. P. F. Watkins and Rev. Abbott in the Methodist church, Feb. 16, and were attended by a large number of relatives and friends. The remains were laid to rest in the K. of P. cemetery to await the resurrection morning.
