Richard Dan Maxson, passed away on April 24, 2013, in Kerrville, Texas. He was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, on March 26, 1922, to Willis Edward Maxson, Jr., and Lucille Eilers Maxson. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beverly Bixby Maxson, and his brother, Willis Edward (Bill) Maxson, III, USNA Class of 1943, killed in defense of his country in the U. S. Navy Submarine Service during WWII, and a niece, Diane Maxson Ligon in 1988. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Kemp Maxson; sons, Richard Dan Maxson, Jr., and wife, Helen Holmes Maxson of Houston; William Keith Maxson of Kerrville; granddaughters, Katherine Maxson Bosman and her husband, Paul, and Amanda Kirkton Maxson and Mallory Sutherland Maxson, all of Houston, and a sister-in-law, Marguerite [sic] Maxson Smith of Llano.

Dan graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1941 where he held the post of Regimental Commander. He excelled in football (Captain), basketball and track and was inducted into the Culver Athletic Hall of Fame in 1997.
He attended the University of Texas in 1941 and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Appointed by future President Lyndon B. Johnson, Dan entered the U. S. Naval Academy in 1942 and graduated in 1945. While at the Academy, he played football and ran track. He served in the United States Navy in the Pacific on board the USS Pittsburgh and the USS Los Angeles. He resigned his commission in 1947.
Dan was employed by Humble Oil and Refining Co. (later Exxon) in 1947 as a gas engineer with responsibilities for the design, construction and operation of many gas processing and treating plants, compressor stations, gas pipelines, and off-shore production facilities. His career included assignments in Katy, Tomball, Refugio, New Orleans and Houston. He was always very proud of his long association with the Humble/Exxon Companies and with his many close company friends. He retired as Division Engineering Manager of the Production Department in Houston in 1983 and moved to Kerrville. He was a Texas Registered Professional Engineer, a member of the Natural Gas Processors Association, the American Institute of Mechanical Engineers, the American Petroleum Institute, and the United States Golf Association (USGA).
Dan was instrumental in organizing the members of Riverhill Country Club to purchase the club facilities and golf course and served as President of the member-owned club from 1988-1990. He loved the game of golf and was Senior Club Champion of Riverhill Country Club in 1987 and Club Champion in 1990. He shot his age several times after turning 80. In addition to golf, his hobbies included bird hunting and gardening. Dan was blessed with a wonderful family and many, many friends. Services will be held at St. Peters Episcopal Church in Kerrville on Saturday, April 27, at 11 AM with interment in the Columbarium.
