Credited largely with making Dallas the medical center of the Southwest. He was also the founder of the Southwestern Medical Foundation and built the Medical Arts Building. His father, a Confederate Army veteran, died when he was 3 months old.

Survived by his wife the former Miss Georgie Fonda Schneider, a son, E. H. Cary Jr., three daughters, Mrs. Ogden Brower of North Tarrytown, NY, Mrs. William L. Carwile of Oklahoma City, OK, and Mrs. John Hill of Houston; a brother J. M. Cary of Houston; a sister, Mrs. Lucille Cary Lowry of Dallas, and seven grandchildren.
