Orchestra Conductor. Born in Budapest, Hungary, he was a violinist best known for being the Master Conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1936 until his death in Philadelphia at age 85. A graduate of the Royal National Hungarian Academy of Music, he first became a violinist in the orchestra of the Capitol Theatre New York, in 1921. He gained International status making 16 recordings as a violinist (1923-29). His first position as maestro came as conductor for the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra (1931-36). In 1936, he became head maestro of the Philadelphia Orchestra which led to his long career with International tours, RCA Victor and Columbia recordings, plus scores of films. He is a recipient of three gold records, two Grammy Awards and was posthumously inducted into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia's Hall of Fame in 2003.
