John was a Captain in the U S Merchant Marine in WWII and worked for Lykes Brothers Steamship Company in New Orleans for 35 years. He earned his masters license in 1955 and was a world traveler. John was also a farmer, rancher, and a life long resident of Chillicothe.

He received a Presidential Citation in 1961 for exceptional courage after he directed the rescue of the Suzasan Maru, a Japanese vessel, during a storm at sea. Pictures of the rescue are in a 1961 issue of Life magazine.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge
